At the time we knew the AM4 platform was going to be around for a few more years and we knew more extreme processors, just like the X and X would be released. All testing takes place inside the Corsair Crystal X. The low air-flow configuration sees a pair of in-take fans mounted in the front of the case on a mm AIO.
Then we have a single mm exhaust fan in the rear of the case, a pretty standard configuration. The Ryzen 9 X has been left stock, so it should be slightly less demanding than the X. First lets run a few benchmarks to see how each board performs with the Ryzen 9 X using the low air-flow configuration.
Contrary to what we just saw with Cinebench, the Asus board actually performed slightly better with the under-volt in this long run Blender test and the reason for that is lower VRM temps. The MSI Tomahawk produced a strong result in Blender, taking seconds to complete the test and that places it on par with the best X boards.
The Gigabyte B Aorus Pro WiFi surprised with the second best result, though it ran 10 degrees hotter than the Tomahawk, and while that makes it a bit toasty, that is a safe operating temperature and the board avoided throttling the X.
Performance aside though, we consider this a fail as running at well over C will shorten the lifespan of the board. Performance is still down on the Tomahawk, so even at 88 C we were running into some throttling in this 30 minute test. The MSI Tomahawk was impressive, peaking at just 66 C degrees and while this might be an optimal setup, you can expect this board to operate somewhere between 66 and 87 degrees depending on setup and ambient temperature.

Feb 27, at PM 2. Maximum operating temperatures for VRM's are dependant on their quality and are often given by manufacturers to be between 'C and 'C depending on the manufacturer. These temperatures are not a 'safe guideline' where you would aim to be, to get your most from the board but rather a warning to not let your VRM temps near there.
Before your temps reach the maximum operating temperature, you will start to see it affecting performance and you will find that your board may automatically lower and clock your maximum voltage of your CPU. Worse than that you might find that the voltage of your CPU to be unstable and will find your bus speed flying up and down, having a huge affect on system stability due to variation in clock speeds under load have a crazy screenshot of when i was testing the fx after its release, with CPU-Z reporting 4.
Speeds were flickering between a MHz bus speed up to MHz. I had most of my VRM problems on ambitious overclocks on cheaper boards with low power phasing and just a CPU waterblock. These problems were usually resolved when i switched to higher end boards, directed some air toward the VRM's or put a waterblock on them.
I would say 85'C is fine, although you would want it lower, its not causing any problems at the moment. What CPU do you have? What is your voltage? Don't consider my waterblock solution as a suggestion since it is overkill and overpriced. My main reason for putting a waterblock on the VRM's was aesthetic reasons. Air flow in that area of your case or sticking on RAM heatsinks if you are really bothered by the temperature.

They will operate above 60 but chances are, their life will be reduced. But to be honest, it sounds like your not getting any problem's and 85 degree's on VRM's is still safe, so you don't have to change.Om642 vacuum pump

My VRM is hitting 80 to 83 degrees c, on a 4. Are these temps in the safe range? What's a good fan solution for them? I could probably toss an extra fan on the back side of my Nh-d I recommend that you place a fan near the heatsink assembly when overclocking this platform - you will have to work out what fits your case and the VRM area best.
Hmm, I have three fans about an inch or 2 above the VRMs pulling heat out of my case. The VRMs are at the top of the board right? I have an NH-d15 on the cpu, so it's a bit of a tight fit. Do you think an Antec Spot Cool blowing towards the back of the case over it would do the job? I haven't seen any fans designed for cooling VRM heatsinks online, just water blocks. I do kinda like the jaunty angle on the R5E PCH heatsink, even though I was initially put off by the aggressive styling.

I might be able to go lower, without hitting my fan controller. Here's my solution for VRM temps. Used a corsair dominator memory cooler, the unit has two small PWM fans. Set mb fan controls to reference VRM temp, my current setpoint is 48C, works nicely. Tags for this Thread rampage v extreme.
